Nevada State Democratic Party Statement in Honor of Martin Luther King Day

LAS VEGAS — Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Judith Whitmer released the following statement in honor of Martin Luther King Day 2022:

“The Nevada State Democratic Party would like to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy on the holiday that bears his name by amplifying the call made by his family: ‘no celebration without legislation.’ Dr. King fought relentlessly for the right to vote, risking his life and freedom in a violent and racist political moment, and he stood in the room when President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law in 1965. Now, nearly 60 years later, we have seen many of the rights guaranteed by the VRA dismantled,” said Chair Whitmer.

“We stand with Dr. King’s family in demanding that his life and work be honored by the Senate immediately passing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and doing their job as the political leaders of a democracy by protecting the sacred right to vote. We call on Senate Democrats to remove all barriers to this process, including the undemocratic filibuster, and we call on Senate Republicans to appeal to the better angels of their nature and realize that they are on the wrong side of history in fighting against voting rights and access.”
