LAS VEGAS — Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Judith Whitmer released the following statement encouraging Congress to extend the federal eviction moratorium in light of the August 26 Supreme Court ruling.
“The Supreme Court very clearly ruled yesterday that the CDC does not have the power to declare a federal eviction moratorium, but Congress does. Whether or not you agree with the Supreme Court ruling is irrelevant; the ruling has clarified the way forward. Now Congress must act. Housing is a human right, especially during a pandemic,” said Chair Whitmer.
“Representative Dina Titus (NV-01) has called for Congressional action to prevent the huge number of evictions that are set to take place now that the moratorium has ended. Nevada continues to have a high level of community spread from the COVID-19 Delta Variant and we’ve simultaneously seen one of the largest rent increases by percentage in the country over the course of the pandemic. Now is not the time to turn thousands of Nevadans and millions of people across the country out into the streets. We urge Congress to take action to prevent these evictions as quickly as possible.”
