Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Judith Whitmer Statement on Mayor John Lee’s Run for Governor

LAS VEGAS, NV—Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Judith Whitmer on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, released the following statement regarding North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee—a former Democrat—who recently announced that he will be running for Governor of Nevada as a Republican:

“Following the deadly insurrection of the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, the subsequent refusal of the majority of the national Republican party to certify a free and fair election, and the atrocious attack on voter rights specifically targeting Black and brown Americans by Republican-led states across this country,  Mayor John Lee changed his party registration last month in a move that can only be deemed unsurprising. As I said at the time, he’s been out of step with the core values of the people of Nevada and the Democratic Party for a long time, steadfastly opposing a woman’s right to choose and holding an A+ rating from the NRA. These aren’t the people-first, progressive politics of the Democratic voters that put him into office, but cynical party-switching, values-shifting pandering is the mark of the modern Republican Party, including its de facto leader, former Democrat Donald Trump, who Mayor Lee claims to have voted for twice.

“The Nevada Democratic Party continues to be in full support of Governor Steve Sisolak, with whom Democrats across the state are working to build a better future for our neighbors and our communities,” Whitmer continued. “Nevadans want good, thoughtful policies that improve the real lives and real futures of everyday families. It’s that simple. Governor Sisolak is on the side of these everyday folks and will continue to work hard on their behalf.”
