Nevada State Democratic Party Statement on Derek Chauvin Conviction

On Tuesday, Secretary of the Nevada State Democratic Party Ahmad Adé made the following statement on behalf of the Party officers: “The Nevada State Democratic Party welcomes the conviction of Derek Chauvin for his murder of George Floyd. We steadfastly affirm that justice – painfully earned and shamefully overdue – has been done today. Although we celebrate this verdict, our hearts remain with the family and loved ones of George Floyd. No satisfaction we take in today’s news can possibly replace the loving and devoted father, son, and brother that the world was robbed of on May 25, 2020.

“Today’s verdict does not represent the end of our shared struggle but merely one step toward the better world we are seeking to build. It is not enough to applaud this outcome – we must strive with all our efforts to dismantle the system that has allowed, and continues to allow, such injustices to take place. We must confront our nation’s shameful legacy of bigotry and systemic racism in the streets of our cities and on the floors of our legislatures.

“It is not enough to say that justice has been served when countless people of color have been denied their human rights by a system that continues to treat them as less-than. As we recognize the rightness and righteousness accomplished today for George Floyd, we must continue to cry out the names of Breonna Taylor, Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, Jorge Gomez, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Oscar Grant, Philando Castile, Alton Sterling, and countless others. There can be justice for none until there is justice for all.

“We call on all Nevada Democrats to join us in demanding more than simple accountability. A system that makes all of us complicit in its failures requires the efforts of all of us to correct. Let us join together in our shared responsibility toward building a system of justice that delivers true justice, true equality, and true human dignity.

“Now and always: Black Lives Matter.”
