NV Democrats First Vice Chair: Trump Has Turned Back the Clock on Women’s Rights

Today, as Vice President Joe Biden unveiled his comprehensive plan to further women’s economic and physical security and ensure women can fully exercise their civil rights, Nevada Democrats First Vice Chair Marty McGarry called out Donald Trump’s long record of turning back the clock on women’s rights. In 2018, Nevadans made history by electing the first majority-women legislature in the country, who went on to pass expansive legislation from the Trust Nevada Women’s Act to decriminalize abortion to implementing protections for gender pay discrimination and so much more. But as the Silver State trailblazed ahead towards a more representative, equitable future, Trump has fought to roll back hard-won victories for women in Nevada and across the country.

Nevada Democrats First Vice Chair Marty McGarry slammed Trump for his regressive policies:

“For four years, Donald Trump has worked to systematically turn back the clock on women’s rights in Nevada and across the country. Despite his promises to do ‘more for women than anybody else,’ Trump’s anti-woman agenda has kept us lodged in the past, from defunding Planned Parenthood and inserting politics into women’s personal decisions to going after our paychecks and spiking our health care costs. Now, as Trump’s failed pandemic response continues to hit Nevada hard, women are on the frontlines of the fight against a public health crisis and economic meltdown of Trump’s own making. Here in Nevada, the nation’s first majority-women legislature is proof that the resistance is being led by women — that’s why we’ll reject Trump’s empty rhetoric in November and elect Joe Biden as president.”

Promise: Trump said he would “do more for women than anybody else” and promised to “take care of women and women’s health care issues.” [Trump Campaign Rally, 10/21/15]

Reality: Trump is aiming to strike down the entirety of the Affordable Care Act, which prohibits insurers from charging women more on the basis of gender or preexisting conditions.

Reality: In fact, Trump supported overturning the ACA without a replacement plan in place, which could add to the ranks of uninsured women across the country. In Nevada, approximately 127,000 women between the ages of 19 and 64 are uninsured.

Reality: The Trump Administration has methodically moved to limit access to birth control and abortion. Trump also issued a Title X gag rule, aiming to strip federal funds from health care providers like Planned Parenthood, leaving many low-income women without access to birth control and other essential reproductive health care services.

Promise: “At The Core Of My Contract Is My Plan To Bring Back Our Jobs. Right? Right Now, 70 Million American Women And Children Live In Poverty Or Near The Brink Of Poverty.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Las Vegas NV, 10/30/16]

Reality: During the coronavirus crisis, women have been disproportionately likely to be laid off, to have left the labor market, or to quit their jobs to care for their families.

Reality: Trump’s White House revoked the 2014 Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces order and spent two years trying to sabotage an Obama-era rule to close the gender pay gap by requiring companies to release pay data by race and gender.

Promise: “We’re Going To Make Child Care Affordable.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Henderson NV, 10/5/16]

Reality: Trump’s tax scam handed out massive giveaways to the ultra-wealthy while reducing the value of child care credits for many working families

Reality: Even during the pandemic, the Trump Administration scaled back paid leave requirements for employers, allowing many companies to decline to provide sick leave for child care. Some 17.7 million health care workers were excluded from emergency paid leave, 75 percent of whom are women.
