Trump’s Campaign Can’t Spin His Failed, Chaotic Pandemic Response

Ahead of Marc Lotter’s appearance at a Nevada Republican Party town hall today, Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy II released the following statement:

“The Trump campaign can’t spin their boss’ failed, chaotic response to the pandemic, and they can’t paper over the horrific reality Nevadans are facing every day. Hundreds of Nevadans are dead, and hundreds of thousands are struggling to survive without a paycheck. It didn’t have to be this bad.

“I shudder to think where our state would be without the decisive leadership and science-based approach Governor Sisolak has taken in addressing this pandemic. Instead of taking the approach of our Governor, Donald Trump ignored the experts, downplayed the virus, and failed to prepare us for what was coming. We deserve better than an erratic president who refuses to put the needs of Nevada families before himself. We deserve a leader in the White House, and this November, we’re going to get one in Joe Biden.”

Promise: In January, Trump claimed the coronavirus was “totally under control” and later suggested that the outbreak would be limited to 15 U.S. cases.

Promise: On March 6, Trump told reporters, “Anybody that wants a test can get a test.” The White House later committed to delivering 27 million tests by the end of March.

Promise: In a televised Oval Office address, Trump promised to marshal “the full power of the federal government and the private sector to protect the American people.”

  • Reality: Just days later, despite repeated requests for testing equipment, the administration told Gov. Steve Sisolak that there was an “indefinite backlog” and no timeline for delivery to Nevada.

  • Reality: While experts warned of a coming pandemic, the Trump administration shipped nearly 18 tons of personal protective equipment (PPE) to China.
