Gun Lobby Rewards Hardy for Extreme Views

The state affiliate of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the Nevada Firearms Coalition PAC (NVFAC), endorsed 4th District Congressional candidate Cresent Hardy yesterday. Hardy received an “A” rating from the group, and his positions on the issues closely mirror those of the Nevada Firearms Coalition PAC.

According to its website, the Nevada Firearms Coalition PAC:

  • Opposes universal background checks
  • Opposes laws limiting access to firearms for the mentally ill
  • Opposes laws that keep guns off of school campuses
  • Supports sales tax exemptions for gun sales
  • Supports weakening or eliminating penalties for people illegally possessing handguns.

Hardy’s Unreasonable Record on Guns:

  • When asked if “children who suffer from severe mental illness should have access to guns without background checks,” Hardy said: “Absolutely, yes.
  • Hardy said that all background checks violate the Second Amendment.
  • Hardy voted multiple times to block consideration of a bill that would prohibit people on the terror watch list from purchasing guns.
  • Hardy voted against a bill that mandates background checks for private gun sales while also improving mental illness reporting.

Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Michael Soneff released the following statement:

“Cresent Hardy is opposed to common sense gun safety measures supported by the vast majority of Nevadans. At a time when Nevada residents are increasingly concerned by mass shootings and the rise of gun violence in our schools, Hardy has voted against even the most basic gun safety provisions like keeping guns out of the hands of mentally ill minors. Hardy’s unreasonable views may be rewarded by special interest groups, but they do not reflect Nevada values.”
