As Judge Brett Kavanaugh faces a Senate panel today for his confirmation hearing to be the next Supreme Court justice, it’s worth remembering that Adam Laxalt “enthusiastically support[s]” Kavanaugh and has urged the Senate to “expeditiously confirm” the anti-choice jurist. With Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, Laxalt’s dream of overturning Roe v. Wade and taking away women’s constitutional right to safe and legal abortion could become reality.
Pres. Trump has made it perfectly clear that he’d only nominate anti-choice judges who would strike down abortion access, predicting that overturning Roe v. Wade “will happen automatically” if he can place enough anti-choice jurists on the bench.
And that’s exactly what Laxalt hopes will happen. Over and over again, the attorney general and Republican gubernatorial candidate has used his office to restrict women’s access to reproductive health care nationwide despite Nevadans’ having passed a pro-choice statute by over 60 percent in 1990. In an embarrassing interview with Reno’s KOLO in June, Laxalt said he would “look into” rolling back that law, comments that his campaign then had to desperately walk back.
Laxalt has also received the endorsement of the anti-choice group Nevada Right to Life, which asks candidates in its 2018 questionnaire if they support overturning Roe v. Wade. Laxalt has not released his completed questionnaire and has refused to answer reporters’ questions about his responses. National Right to Life’s ultimate goal is to overturn Roe v. Wade in order to establish “personhood” and outlaw abortion.
Nevada State Democratic Party spokeswoman Helen Kalla released the following statement:
“Adam Laxalt would love nothing more than to see Nevada women’s right to safe and legal abortion eliminated entirely. Though he won’t admit it because he knows he’s incredibly out of touch with Nevadans, Laxalt has been crusading against women’s reproductive rights his entire time as attorney general, and shows no sign of letting up until his ultimate goal of overturning Roe v. Wade is realized. With an anti-choice ally like Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, a Laxalt administration would ignore Nevadans’ will and continue chipping away at women’s reproductive freedoms until there’s nothing left.”
