Heller Breaks His Promise Again, Votes to Defund Planned Parenthood for the Tenth Time

Today, Sen. Dean Heller cast his 10th vote in Washington to defund Planned Parenthood health centers, which would take services away from nearly 14,000 Nevadans who rely on the organization for preventative health care services like birth control and cancer screenings.

Heller promised last year in Reno that he would protect Planned Parenthood and even said: “I have no problems with federal funding for Planned Parenthood” – then he backtracked under pressure less than 24 hours later. Despite Nevadans’ overwhelming support for the organization, Heller has even bragged about his decade-long record of voting to defund Planned Parenthood.

  • # 1 – July 2007: Heller voted for an amendment that would bar the use of federal funds by Planned Parenthood.

  • # 2 – July 2009: Heller voted for an amendment to block federal funds from reaching Planned Parenthood.

  • # 3 – February 2011: Heller voted in favor of Mike Pence’s amendment to prohibit Planned Parenthood from receiving federal funds.

  • # 4 – February 2011: Heller voted for a bill that would prohibit federal funds from being appropriated to Planned Parenthood or its affiliates.

  • # 5 – April 2011: Heller voted for a resolution to prohibit the federal funding of Planned Parenthood.

  • # 6 – August 2015: Heller voted to advance a bill that would prohibit federal funding for Planned Parenthood or any of the organization’s affiliates, subsidiaries, successors, or clinics.

  • # 7 – December 2015: Heller voted for a bill to block federal funds from Planned Parenthood.

  • # 8 – July 2017: Heller voted to defund Planned Parenthood for one year.

  • # 9 – July 2017: Heller voted to advance a health care bill that would block federal funding for organizations that provide abortions for one year.

  • # 10 – August 2018: Heller voted for an amendment that would have blocked federal funding from Planned Parenthood.

Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Sarah Abel released the following statement:

“With every vote he casts to defund Planned Parenthood, Dean Heller shows how out of touch he is with Nevada women and families who support reproductive rights and access to vital health care. Planned Parenthood is a crucial health care provider for thousands of people in our state, and the fact that Heller is continuing to bend to his party’s right-wing, anti-choice agenda shows he’s once again not representing Nevada in Washington.”
