#AskLaxalt Why He Wants to Take Away Nevadans’ Health Care

Today, the NV Dems launched a new issue page on AskLaxalt.com, focusing on Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Laxalt’s disastrous views on access to affordable health care. This week marked the 53rd anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid being signed into law, and a recent poll of Nevada voters shows health care to be a top issue in the midterm election.

Thanks to Trump and Republicans’ unending crusade to dismantle our nation’s health care system, the average health insurance premium in Nevada increased by over 40 percent last year and is forecast to be 10 percent higher in 2019 due to GOP sabotage, which caused costs to increase by nearly eight percent when Nevadans otherwise would have seen premiums decrease. Meanwhile, Laxalt has done nothing to stop Trump’s health care sabotage, which comes as no surprise given Laxalt happily accepted Trump’s endorsement in June.

Trump has intentionally sabotaged insurance markets by ending cost-sharing reduction payments, which keep premiums affordable for low-income Americans. When the state asked Attorney General Laxalt nearly a year ago to consider suing to stop Trump, he ignored the request. In January, Laxalt joined Trump in opposing Nevada’s Medicaid expansion, admitting he would have turned away billions in free federal dollars to cover hundreds of thousands of Nevadans. Laxalt and Trump both stand in stark contrast to Gov. Brian Sandoval, who was the first Republican governor to support Medicaid expansion and who called ending cost-sharing reduction payments “devastating.”

Nevada State Democratic Party spokeswoman Helen Kalla released the following statement:

“Adam Laxalt’s decision to align himself with Trump on health care is another example of his putting his own agenda over what’s best for Nevadans. Instead of going toe to toe with Trump over protecting Nevadans’ access to affordable health care, Laxalt has stepped aside and let Trump run roughshod over Nevada families. With voters consistently reporting health care as a top issue this election year, they’ll reject a candidate like Laxalt who refuses to stand up for their access to care.”

The NV Dems launched AskLaxalt.com to reveal Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Laxalt’s dodges and radical views on a range of key issues. Each week, a new issue page will be rolled out to remind Nevadans just how out of step Laxalt is on issues that matter to them.
