One Year Ago Today: Heller Breaks Health Care Promises with Repeal Vote, Signing on to Radical Repeal Bill

One year ago today, Sen. Dean Heller cast a career-defining vote to dismantle the Affordable Care Act – leaving Nevadans feeling betrayed and political reporters asking: “What the hell was he thinking?” Heller also added his name to the Republicans’ most radical repeal plan, breaking essentially every major promise he had made in the health care debate. Heller spent the previous month leading up to this vote tying himself in knots and taking every position possible. Take a walk down memory lane….

HELLER PROMISED TO PROTECT NEVADANS’ HEALTH CARE:

  • Heller: “I’m telling you right now, I cannot support a piece of legislation that takes insurance away from tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Nevadans.” [6/23/17] (VIDEO)

  • Heller: “I’m just telling you this. If this is the bill, if this is the language on that procedural motion… I won’t be voting for it.” [6/23/17] (VIDEO)

BUT DAYS LATER… HE WAS BACK:

  • Heller said he’s ‘back to the table’ to negotiate on repeal. [The Nevada Independent, 6/27/17]

THEN HELLER DODGED QUESTIONS:

  • Heller declined to show his cards on health care negotiations, ran away from a reporter on Capitol Hill. [CNN, 6/29/17]

REPUBLICANS GREW CONFIDENT:

  • Mike Allen: “Republicans keep telling me Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada, a third apparent ‘nay,’ will be ‘bought off.’” [Axios, 7/14/17]

  • HEADLINE: “Republicans Confident Senator Dean Heller Will Be ‘Bought Off,’ Pass Trumpcare.” [New York Magazine, 7/14/17]

AND TRUMP PUT THE PRESSURE ON:

  • Trump to Heller: “Look, he wants to remain a Senator, doesn’t he?” [7/19/17] (VIDEO)

SO… HELLER FLIPPED:

  • “Heller a ‘yes’ on motion to proceed for ACA repeal.” [Axios, 7/25/18]

  • Heller’s spokeswoman “didn’t immediately respond to an inquiry… on why Heller supports a motion to proceed now but opposed it earlier.” [The Nevada Independent, 7/25/17]

THEN HE FLOPPED:

  • After weeks of waffling, Heller voted ‘yes’ on failed ‘skinny repeal’ of Obamacare [Reno Gazette-Journal, 7/28/17]

AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF:

  • Heller signed on to the Graham-Cassidy amendment [The Nevada Independent, 7/27/17]
