Yesterday, in a rare media availability at a campaign rally, Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Laxalt tried to hide his well-documented opposition to DACA, which keeps families together and protects immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children from deportation.
This is not the first time Laxalt has walked away from the chance to stand up for Nevada’s immigrant families. He ignored a previous question about the “right course of action for DREAMers,” and while Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval joined other governors to stand up for DACA, Laxalt declined to join similar efforts by attorneys general.
When immigrant families tried to confront Laxalt about his lawsuit against DAPA, which Gov. Sandoval opposed, he hid from them. While Laxalt’s staff told the immigrant families he wasn’t in the office, they secretly invited press back up to his office to talk to him after the families left.
Nevada State Democratic Party spokeswoman Helen Kalla released the following statement:
“Lying Laxalt is trying to backtrack on his failure to protect Nevada’s immigrant families because he knows his radical position is out of step with voters. Laxalt’s record speaks volumes — he has failed to stand up against Trump’s attacks on DREAMers time and again. Nothing Laxalt can say now will make Nevadans forget his craven support of Trump’s agenda over keeping Nevada families together.”
