A recent New York Times report has exposed how Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos effectively killed her department’s investigation into widespread abuses at large for-profit colleges. A team that once included a dozen lawyers and investigators under the Obama Administration has been whittled down to three employees with a severely scaled back mission and a former dean of one of those for-profit institutions acting as the team’s new “supervisor.”
This isn’t the first time DeVos, a right-wing billionaire, has protected shady for-profit college scams at the expense of Nevada’s hardworking families. Since taking over, DeVos has also gutted federal consumer protection rules to provide debt relief for students who were ripped off by for-profit colleges and stopped approving new student-fraud claims brought against for-profit schools.
Despite loud opposition from Nevadans, Sen. Dean Heller cast a deciding vote last year to confirm DeVos to run the Department of Education. Heller has been silent on the Trump Administration’s agenda—aided by DeVos—to fuel a for-profit college comeback.
The Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Sarah Abel released the following statement:
“With the Department of Education shelving investigations into for-profit college scams, Sen. Heller’s vote to confirm Betsy DeVos keeps looking worse and worse. Instead of standing up to protect Nevada students and families, Heller has ignored the will of his constituents and prioritized loyalty to President Trump. Nevada students and families deserve a senator who will hold shady for-profit colleges accountable, not sit on the sidelines while the Secretary of Education enacts their lobbying wish list.”
