Close Heller Friend & Ally Kevin McCarthy Schedules Vote to Restart Yucca Mountain Next Week

Republican House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy —one of Sen. Dean Heller’s closest friends and allies in Congress—just scheduled a vote on the House floor next week for a bill that would restart the process to license Yucca Mountain and make Nevada a nuclear waste dumping ground.

Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Sarah Abel released the following statement:

“Sen. Heller tries to brag about standing between Washington and Yucca Mountain, but our weak and ineffective senator couldn’t even dissuade one of his closest friends on Capitol Hill from preparing to ram this bill through the Republican-controlled House. Nevadans have made it clear they don’t want nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, and Heller seems to be more focused on playing politics than actually stopping this disastrous project from moving forward in any way.”

BACKGROUND

Heller And McCarthy Became Friends In 2006 And “Kept Up Their Friendship Through Regular Workouts At The House Gym” For Over A Decade. “Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada and McCarthy were both in the House GOP freshman class of 2006 and became friends even before they were sworn in. Even with Heller’s promotion to the Senate and McCarthy’s rise through the leadership ranks, the two have kept up their friendship through regular workouts at the House gym (Heller likes weightlifting and the treadmill, while McCarthy rides stationary bikes and participates in P90X sessions) and socializing with their wives.” [Politico, 10/1/15]
