Over the weekend, news broke on Twitter that Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Laxalt will fundraise in April with “special guest” John Bolton, Pres. Trump’s new national security advisor. Bolton is widely viewed by experts as a danger to national security, with his reckless warmongering against North Korea and Iran and his enduring support for the ill-advised Iraq invasion.
Laxalt’s history with Bolton runs deep. Laxalt worked for Bolton at the U.S. State Department, and Bolton campaigned for Laxalt’s attorney general run in 2014 and attended Laxalt’s annual Basque Fry in 2016. Bolton’s PAC gave $5,000 to Laxalt’s campaign in 2017, and it was an early client of the disgraced Cambridge Analytica, using personal information the firm dubiously scraped from Facebook to deliver “psychograhic messaging” to voters to sway elections.
Laxalt is no stranger to the Ricketts family either, who are hosting the fundraiser at their New York City residence. RNC Finance Chairman Todd Ricketts co-hosted a DC fundraiser for Laxalt last May. The Ricketts have long been connected to Laxalt’s biggest benefactor, billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. Joe Ricketts and Adelson funded a super PAC that was the sole contributor to the American Integrity Project, a PAC dedicated to sinking the candidacy of Laxalt’s primary opponent, Dan Schwartz.
