Laxalt to Speak at NRA Leadership Forum (Again)

Adam Laxalt, Republican attorney general and gubernatorial hopeful, is slated to speak at the NRA’s annual Leadership Forum in Dallas, TX on May 4, 2018. A darling of the gun lobby, Laxalt was also a main stage speaker at last year’s NRA confab — the only state attorney general to receive such a coveted slot.

At last year’s NRA convention, Laxalt lavished praise on the NRA and on Donald Trump for his support of the gun lobby:

“Isn’t it nice to have a President that stands for the second amendment and is willing to come here and address the NRA and tell us that he is going to be with us for the next 8 years? […] I commend the NRA for understanding the slippery slope. They understand you have to fight for every single inch.”

The NRA was the driving force behind opposition to Question 1, the successful 2016 ballot measure to expand background checks on gun sales, pouring $6.6 million into Nevada. Laxalt supported the NRA’s campaign — even recording an ad for the group — and has been in the hot seat for refusing to enforce the measure that most Nevadans approved. In an interview posted last week with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Laxalt dodged a question about whether he’d sign a bill as governor to expand background checks, putting him at odds with Gov. Sandoval, who’s expressed support of such a solution.

Laxalt has received $3,558 from the NRA directly, and the group donated over $80,000 to the Republican Attorneys General Association in 2014.

Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Helen Kalla released the following statement:

“Adam Laxalt is the gun lobby’s biggest advocate in Nevada. He worked hand in hand with the NRA to oppose a commonsense background check initiative and continues to bask in the NRA’s national spotlight. The powerful gun lobby showers Laxalt with money and recognition because he can be counted on to push their partisan, ideological agenda onto Nevadans. It’s clear that voters don’t want a special interest stooge in the governor’s mansion, and we’ll make sure Laxalt never gets there.”
