Facing a pro-Trump primary challenger in conservative businessman Danny Tarkanian, Republican Sen. Dean Heller continues to shift further and further to the right and towards Trump on immigration in the hopes of making it to the general election.
Senator Heller has frequently flip-flopped on immigration issues depending on the political environment – and the 2018 election cycle has been no different. Heller has been running from questions about the Dream Act, equivocating on the DACA program, and recently told POLITICO that he “didn’t have time” to meet with the bipartisan group of Senators working to protect Dreamers. Now, under pressure, Heller is openly embracing Trump’s controversial immigration plan.
Nevada State Democratic Party Executive Director Alana Mounce released the following statement:
“Once again, Senator Heller is willing to sell out Nevada’s immigrant families because he is more concerned about preserving his own political career. Thousands of Nevadans are counting on Heller to do the right thing, but he keeps letting them down. This kind of spineless, self-serving behavior explains why Dean Heller will be voted out of office in 2018.”
