Elko voters who were hoping to see Adam Laxalt speak on Friday evening were likely disappointed when he didn’t show. The Republican gubernatorial hopeful was scheduled to be a keynote speaker at an Elko County Republican Party dinner, for which voters expecting to hear from Laxalt paid $65 to attend.
But Laxalt skipped the engagement and, apparently, was nowhere near Elko on Friday. According to POLITICO, a fundraiser for Laxalt was held on Friday afternoon at Las Vegas’ Venetian resort, owned by casino magnate and top Laxalt benefactor Sheldon Adelson. The fundraiser was well-attended by prominent national Republicans who were in town for Adelson’s annual Republican Jewish Coalition conference. Among those who flocked to Las Vegas for the confab were Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel, Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin, Anthony Scaramucci, and Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts of the Ricketts family, who are top GOP donors.
Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Helen Kalla released the following statement:
“If Laxalt bailed on Elko County voters to schmooze with special interest donors and Washington Republicans at Sheldon Adelson’s casino, that shows Nevadans where Laxalt’s priorities truly lie. Laxalt is the ultimate bought-and-paid-for candidate who will do anything to suck up to those with money and influence. Nevadans deserve a governor who will choose them over wealthy donors.”
