Today, Republican Sen. Dean Heller voted for an unconstitutional and unpopular abortion ban that would threaten women’s health. Heller is a co-sponsor of this harmful bill, which failed on a procedural vote in the Senate.
Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Sarah Abel released the following statement on Heller’s vote:
“Sen. Heller and Washington Republicans just voted yet again to try to take complex decision-making away from women and their medical doctors and put it in the hands of politicians. Dean Heller has repeatedly voted to advance his own political ideology on this issue at the expense of women’s rights and health. Nevadans have made it clear that they support a woman’s right to choose, and Heller’s vote for this bill underscores just how out of touch he is with voters in this state.”
The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists opposes this legislation because of how it would insert politics into medical decisions. The bill would prohibit a doctor from providing care even if a pregnancy is diagnosed with serious fetal anomalies.
