Today, The Nevada Independent reported that Nevada’s Republican governor, Brian Sandoval, joined a bipartisan group of 10 other governors on a letter urging Congress to find a solution to protect 800,000 DACA recipients from deportation. Sandoval’s decision to take a stand against Washington Republicans’ anti-immigrant agenda stands in stark contrast to his fellow Republican Adam Laxalt’s deafening silence on this issue.
Nevada’s attorney general is conspicuously absent from the national debate on protecting immigrants and their families from Trump’s deportation machine. As of this week, 20 of Laxalt’s fellow attorneys general have signed onto a letter urging Congress to swiftly pass a clean DREAM Act in the wake of Trump’s decision to end the DACA program.
Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Helen Kalla released the following statement:
“Adam Laxalt’s far-right, anti-immigrant ideology is out of step with Nevada values and has no place in the governor’s mansion. His complete lack of leadership on behalf Nevada families is baffling, and voters will remember his cowardice in 2018.”
Laxalt has made zero effort to protect Nevada’s 13,000 DACA beneficiaries since becoming attorney general. He still hasn’t joined nearly half of all attorneys general in lawsuits challenging Trump’s decision to punish immigrants who were brought to the United States as youth. In 2015, Laxalt added the State of Nevada to a lawsuit opposing Pres. Obama’s immigration executive action — with the goal of deporting DREAMers and tearing immigrant families apart — without the consent of Gov. Sandoval.
