Heller Ignores Legal Experts, Votes to Confirm Trump’s Unqualified Judicial Nominee

Dean Heller is obsessed with confirming partisan, unqualified judges to lifetime appointments. Today, he joined with Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans to confirm President Trump’s controversial nominee for a federal judgeship who was deemed unqualified by the American Bar Association. The ABA’s Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary rated Leonard Steven Grasz “not qualified” in a stunning and unanimous 14-0 vote, in part because of his questionable temperament. Heller’s vote to confirm Grasz raises serious concerns about his agenda to install more Republican judges on the bench – putting partisan ideology over basic professional competence.

Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Sarah Abel released the following statement on Heller’s vote to confirm this unqualified judicial nominee:

“This is yet another example of Senator Heller compromising his integrity in order to desperately pander to Republican primary voters and ingratiate himself to Mitch McConnell and President Trump. Heller is putting the political agenda of his party’s leaders ahead of the recommendations of legal experts who said unanimously that this dangerous nominee lacks the temperament and qualifications to serve as a federal judge. How low is Senator Heller willing to go just to score some points for the primary?”

Heller Voted To Confirm Leonard Steven Grasz To The U.S. Circuit Court. On December 12, 2017, Heller voted in favor of “the Nomination (Confirmation Leonard Steven Grasz, of Nebraska, to be U.S. Circuit Judge for the Eighth Circuit). The nomination was confirmed 50-48, with two Senators not voting.” [Senate Roll Call Vote 313, 12/12/17]
