In another reckless attempt to spike people’s costs and slash health coverage, Republican Senator Dean Heller is backing a new partisan scheme to jam a repeal of the individual mandate into the Senate GOP’s tax plan. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates this reckless move would result in rising premiums and 13 million fewer Americans having health insurance over the next decade. The CBO also released a new report revealing that the GOP tax proposal would threaten billions of dollars in Medicare funding.
In June, standing next to Republican Governor Brian Sandoval, Senator Heller said at a press conference: “I cannot support a piece of legislation that takes insurance away from tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Nevadans.” This tax scam is just the latest example of Heller breaking that promise to protect Nevadans’ health care.
Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Sarah Abel released the following statement on the Senate GOP’s new plan:
“After his summer of self-destructive reversals on health care, Senator Heller is now endorsing a tax bill that would break his promises on health care all over again. This partisan plan will threaten Medicare funding, drive up health care costs for middle class families and cause millions of Americans to lose health insurance. Senator Heller’s reckless push to cut taxes for his ultra-wealthy donors at the expense of health care coverage for Nevada families shows just how out of touch he’s become during his decade in Washington.”
