Terrified of His Trump-Fueled Primary Challenger, Heller Frantically Flip-Flops on Trump’s Unconstitutional Travel Ban

FLIP: IN JANUARY, SENATOR HELLER OPPOSED TRUMP’S TRAVEL BAN

  • Heller Opposed Trump’s Muslim Ban: “I Am Deeply Troubled ‎By The Appearance Of A Religious Ban. ‎The Use Of An Overly Broad Executive Order Is Not The Way To Strengthen National Security.” “Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.): ‘I agree that better vetting and border protection measures are necessary to our current immigration system. That’s why I support the thorough vetting of individuals entering our country. However, I am deeply troubled ‎by the appearance of a religious ban. ‎The use of an overly broad executive order is not the way to strengthen national security. ‎I encourage the Administration to partner with Congress to find a solution.’” [Washington Post, 1/31/17]

FLOP: DAYS AFTER A NEW POLL SHOWED SENATOR HELLER LOSING HIS PRIMARY, HELLER ENDORSED TRUMP’S TRAVEL BAN

  • Nevada Independent: Heller Appeared To Endorse President Trump’s Travel Restriction Of Several Predominantly Muslim Countries. “Sen. Dean Heller is staunchly promoting Republican-led efforts to overhaul the tax code a day before the release of a major bill, while also appearing to implicitly endorse one of President Donald Trump’s most contentious proposals — a broad travel restriction of several predominantly Muslim countries.” [Nevada Independent,11/2/17; KKOH, The Dan Mason Show, 11/1/17] (AUDIO)
  • Heller: “The Question You Have To Ask Yourself: Do You Want Terrorists Coming Into This Country? And Three Times The President Has Tried To Stop It.” “Heller also appeared to indirectly back the foreign country travel restrictions proposed by President Donald Trump, connecting the ban — which has been blocked in federal court several times — with this week’s terrorist attack in New York that left 8 people dead. ‘Well you saw what happened yesterday up in New York, and the question you have to ask yourself: do you want terrorists coming into this country?’ he said. ‘And three times the president has tried to stop it, and three times Obama-era judges have allowed these people into our country. So do you want conservative judges or do you want liberal judges? Because it’s the liberal judges that are making us less safe in this country.’” [Nevada Independent,11/2/17; KKOH, The Dan Mason Show, 11/1/17] (AUDIO)
  • Republicans In Nevada “Are Bracing For A Nasty Primary Season” After A New Poll Came Out From JMC Analytics Showing Tarkanian Beating Heller 44-38. “Las Vegas businessman Danny Tarkanian leads Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) in the first poll of the Republican primary contest in Nevada. The survey from JMC Analytics finds Tarkanian at 44 percent and Heller at 38 percent. Seventeen percent say they are undecided. Tarkanian, who has never won elected office despite five previous bids, is viewed favorably by 59 percent of Nevadans and unfavorably by 24 percent. Heller, the first-term incumbent, is at 51 percent favorable and 43 unfavorable. Republicans are bracing for a nasty primary season that is breaking along establishment and grass-roots lines. The 2018 contests will pit Breitbart News chairman Stephen Bannon, the former White House chief strategist, against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and the incumbents he is trying to protect.” [The Hill, 10/27/17]
