On October 4, Republicans in Congress said the Las Vegas mass shooting inspired them to crack down on reproductive rights and renew support for legislative efforts to criminalize abortion.
On October 16, Nevada Senator Dean Heller quietly signed on to an unconstitutional abortion ban in the Senate. The bill represents a direct challenge to the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision.
Republicans in Congress just held a formal hearing on a bill to ban abortions after just six weeks — before many women even realize they are pregnant.
Nevada State Democratic Party Executive Director Alana Mounce released the following statement on Senator Heller’s support for banning abortion:
“Dean Heller has been voting in Congress for the past decade to try to defund Planned Parenthood, and now he is directly attacking a woman’s constitutional right to decide for herself if and when she has children. Senator Heller’s support for this reckless abortion ban is an insult to women who are facing complex, real-world decisions and often unimaginable medical situations. Nevadans support women’s reproductive freedom, and they will make that clear at the ballot box in 2018 when they replace Dean Heller with a Senator who shares our values.”
The medical community, including the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, strongly opposes abortion bans because they prevent doctors from giving patients the best health care possible.
