NV Dems Chair: Adam Laxalt Is the Most Partisan & Self-Serving Attorney General in Nevada History

Adam Laxalt is announcing today that he will run for Governor… something he apparently still hasn’t bothered to discuss with term-limited Republican Governor Brian Sandoval. In fact, Sandoval has spent the last few weeks repeatedly slamming Laxalt’s reckless proposal to undermine the state’s bipartisan increase in public education funding – saying Laxalt’s plan would “hurt kids” and calling it a “slap in the face” to Nevada’s education system.

“Adam Laxalt, the most partisan and self-serving Attorney General in Nevada history, is an empty suit seeking an unwarranted political promotion,” said Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy II. “Adam Laxalt’s refusal to stand up for Nevadans’ health care, his plan to eviscerate critical public education funding, and his job-killing anti-LGBTQ agenda are a stark reminder that he is too out of touch to be our next Governor. In his brief time in Nevada, Adam Laxalt has proven himself to be an unethical puppet for Sheldon Adelson and an ideologue pandering to the far-right fringes of the Republican Party. Nevadans are ready to reject Adam Laxalt’s right-wing agenda and elect a Democratic Governor in 2018 to lead our state forward.”

Adam Laxalt has been engulfed in a major ethics controversy this year after he was caught on tape trying to intervene in a lawsuit and abuse the powers of the AG’s office on behalf of his biggest campaign donor, billionaire mega-donor Sheldon Adelson. Laxalt has also been in the hot seat recently for his political decision to thwart the will of voters and prevent implementation of Question 1, a ballot initiative expanding background checks on gun sales that passed in 2016.

The Cook Political Report and Inside Elections rate the Nevada Governor’s race as a toss-up. National Journal ranks Nevada as the #4 governorship most likely to flip parties.
