Reno, NV – Today, Republican Congressman Mark Amodei voted for the TrumpCare plan to take health care away from 24 million Americans, raise premiums for older Americans, and threaten care for 294,300 Northern Nevada residents with pre-existing conditions, all to pay for a $600 billion tax cut that disproportionately benefits the rich. During the 2016 election cycle, Congressman Amodei served as Trump’s campaign chairman in Nevada.
Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy II released the following statement:
“This bill is a smoking black hole for health care in Nevada, and Congressman Amodei is on notice for this heartless, reckless vote. By voting to strip affordable health care from millions of Americans – including 294,300 residents of Northern Nevada who have pre-existing conditions – to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy, Congressman Amodei showed that his loyalty lies with Trump and D.C. Republicans instead of his constituents. Working families in Northern Nevada deserve a member of Congress who protects their health care.”
The first version of TrumpCare had just 17 percent approval from the public. When Republicans couldn’t get enough votes from the most extreme right-wing of their party to pass this bill, they made it worse behind closed doors.
Republicans amended the bill to:
- Allow insurance companies to charge Americans with pre-existing conditions more in out of pocket costs
- Let insurance companies limit payments for catastrophic illnesses
- Gut $880 billion from Medicaid
- Defund Planned Parenthood
Republicans in Congress exempted themselves from this bill, and then scheduled a vote on the final legislation with no committee hearings, no markups, no amendments, no idea how much it will cost, and just a couple of hours of debate on the House floor.
