Las Vegas, NV — A new ad released this week in the race for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District charges that Danny Tarkanian “wants to privatize Social Security” and “would raise the retirement age.” In response, the self-proclaimed Tea Party radical’s campaign managerconfirmed this week in a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal that Danny Tarkanian’s plan for Social Security is indeed privatizing the program and raising the retirement age.
Over the course of his nasty primary battle, Danny Tarkanian repeatedly advocated for raising the Social Security retirement age, a move that would force seniors who have paid into the program to wait to receive the benefits they have earned. Since as far back as 2010, Tarkanian has also been arguing that Social Security “should be privatized into individual, private accounts” and a previous ad (from the last time he ran for Congress, in another district) discussing his support for privatization was rated “legit.” His plan would risk the retirement security of Nevada seniors on Wall Street and threaten the financial stability of the program.
“In Congress, Danny Tarkanian would put his ideological Tea Party agenda ahead of protecting Nevada seniors, threatening the promises we’ve made,” said Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Stewart Boss. “Voters in this district don’t like Danny’s extreme plans to raise the retirement age or privatize the program, and his positions show just how out of touch he is with the people he’s trying to represent.”
