Ahead of Pence Visit, NV Dems Slam Trump’s Disrespectful Rhetoric on Veterans

Reno, NV – With Donald Trump’s running mate Indiana Governor Mike Pence campaigning today in Northern Nevada, Democrats and local veterans slammed Donald Trump’s consistent disrespect for military families and called out Pence for refusing to apologize for Trump’s latest attacks on a Gold Star family. Nevada State Democratic Party First Vice Chair Chris Wicker was joined in Reno by Senate District 15 candidate and veteran’s spouse Devon Reese, U.S. Marine Corps veteran Alexander Goff and U.S. Army veteran Henry “Hank” Alderson. Watch video clips of their remarks here.

Over the weekend, Trump repeatedly insulted the parents of fallen U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, while Pence issued a cynical statement to try to control the damage. Khizr Khan had addressed the Democratic National Convention last week with his wife, Ghazala, by his side to discuss the pain of losing their son at war.

Nevada State Democratic Party First Vice Chair Chris Wicker: “Most Americans have the decency and common sense to admit they haven’t sacrificed anything that compares with the pain that a Gold Star family goes through. But Donald Trump isn’t decent and he showed yet again this weekend that he’s temperamentally unfit to be Commander-in-Chief. Instead of apologizing for Trump’s disrespect towards veterans and military families, Mike Pence will be in Reno and Carson City today advocating for Trump to move into the White House.”

Senate District 15 candidate and veteran’s spouse Devon Reese: “When Donald Trump insults our men and women in uniform and attacks families who have made the ultimate sacrifice – for me it feels personal. It’s repugnant, and it’s an affront to people like my husband who have risked their lives to keep Nevada and our country safe. And as an attorney, Trump’s unconstitutional suggestion that someone doesn’t have the right to free speech – the right to criticize a political leader – should send shudders down our spines.”

U.S. Marine Corps veteran Alexander Goff: “I saw Khizr Khan’s speech in Philadelphia last week – it was a heartbreaking and emotional story that showed how Donald Trump would divide and weaken our country if he were elected President. Trump’s response lashing out against this Gold Star family confirms my worst fears. He is dangerous and unstable. The fact that Trump would try to equate his business record with the pain and suffering that this family went through losing their son shows a horrifying level of disrespect.”

U.S. Army veteran Henry “Hank” Alderson: “I proudly served my country for 23 years in the United States Army, and I firmly believe Donald Trump is a dismal, reckless bully who would make America less safe and who doesn’t respect our veterans. My son was a medic for the U.S. Army, and he was nearly killed by a suicide bomb in the Middle East. Shame on Mike Pence if he doesn’t have the guts today to stand up to Donald Trump on these disgraceful attacks against the Khan family.”
