Las Vegas, NV – Today, Nevada Democrats held a press conference denouncing Donald Trump’s racist attacks accusing U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel of a “conflict of interest” because of his Mexican heritage. Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Roberta Lange was joined by Hispanic Legislative Caucus Vice Chair Assemblyman Nelson Araujo and Mexican-American attorney Jessica Cruz. Judge Curiel, who was born in Indiana, is presiding over civil fraud lawsuits against Trump University. In a new CNN interview that aired in full Sunday, Trump repeatedly doubled down on his racist attacks against Judge Curiel.
It’s not enough for Trump supporters like Congressman Heck, Congressman Hardy, Danny Tarkanian and Michael Roberson to denounce these blatantly racist remarks. These Republicans need to disavow Donald Trump.
Jessica Cruz, Mexican-American attorney: “Just like me, Judge Curiel is the son of Mexican-American immigrants. But Donald Trump continues to insist that this man’s Mexican roots somehow discount his American citizenship and his ability to do his job. Trump has said so many irresponsible, dangerous, offensive things that it’s easy for these kinds of comments to be normalized. This is not normal. Donald Trump is a racist. Over and over again, Trump has confirmed his racism against Mexican-Americans, and he has no business being our President.”
Assemblyman Nelson Araujo, Hispanic Legislative Caucus Vice Chair: “Trump’s ignorant criticism is no longer just directed towards undocumented immigrants. He’s talking about tens of millions of people born in this country whose Hispanic last name or the color of their skin makes them “suspicious.” If they truly stand with Latinos, Republicans like Congressman Heck and Congressman Hardy have a responsibility to actually disavow Donald Trump. It’s time for Republicans to stop supporting this racist bully.”
Roberta Lange, Nevada State Democratic Party Chair: “Donald Trump can try to distract all he wants from the fraudulent scheme that is Trump University, but engaging in a racist attack against a sitting judge further disqualifies him from the White House. In Nevada, nearly 30 percent of our population is Latino, and Democrats understand that our people are our greatest strength. Every politician in Nevada who has lined up behind Trump as the Republican nominee for President is endorsing this racist rhetoric and his ugly, divisive brand of politics.”
