Las Vegas, NV – This past Sunday afternoon, a fire broke out at a low-level radioactive waste site in Nye County. Thankfully, it appears no one was hurt in the fire, which reportedly has been successfully put out.
But the concern at the potential consequences of a fire at a low-level radioactive waste site highlights the danger that nuclear industry lobbyist Jeb Bush and part-time Florida Senator Marco Rubio’s plan to store high-level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain poses for Nevada families.
Besides pushing for Yucca Mountain as Governor, Bush still to this day is listed as a member of a pro-Yucca lobbying organization. As for Rubio, the former Republican Party of Florida credit card holder has been even more blatant about his support for turning Nevada into a nuclear waste dump, saying, “I support Yucca Mountain.”
Which we guess isn’t surprising, given Rubio’s embrace of the top Yucca Mountain lobbyist in the state of Nevada: former failed Governor and top nuclear industry lobbyist, Bob List.
“This weekend’s fire near a low-level radioactive waste site highlights how dangerous the potential consequences are of Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio’s plan to store high-level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain,” said Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Zach Hudson. “Whether it’s Jeb Bush still being a lobbyist for Yucca Mountain, or Marco Rubio outright saying he wants to turn Nevada into a nuclear waste dump, neither of the Florida Republican candidates for President seem to care about keeping Nevada safe.”
