How Will Rand’s Extreme Positions Play with Nevada Voters?

Las Vegas, NV – Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is trying to brand himself as a ‘different’ type of conservative who will appeal beyond the traditional Republican base. But a closer look at his record shows he’s no different than the rest of the Republican field.

Here’s a closer look at Rand’s extreme policies:

Opposes increasing the minimum wage
Opposes equal pay for women in the workplace
Proposed a tax plan that raises the burden on working Americans
Voted against allowing students to refinance loans

Voted NO on the bipartisan immigration reform bill supported by both Nevada senators
Supported Arizona’s SB 1040 “Show Me Your Papers” bill
Sponsored a bill to ban citizenship for children born to undocumented parents
Suggested building an electronic underground fence – the kind people use for their dogs – on the southern border, defended it as cost-effective and humane
Ran away from a DREAMer asking about federal immigration policy

Questioned the need for restoring the Voting Rights Act because, “we have an African-American president”
Repeatedly suggested private entities have a right to discriminate
Doesn’t believe in gay rights because it is, “based on your behavior”

Voted NO on the Violence Against Women Act
Said he would defund Planned Parenthood
Supported banning abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest or the life of the mother

“Rand Paul has tried to package himself as ‘different’ than other Republicans who can appeal to new demographics, but his record reveals the same extreme ideology as the rest of the pack,” said Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Roberta Lange. “He believes private businesses should be allowed to discriminate against customers, and questioned the need for the Voting Rights Act while voting rights are under assault across the country. He voted with a fringe group of Republican Senators against bipartisan immigration reform and even suggested building an underground electric fence – similar to the kind people use for their dogs – on the border. He’s sponsored legislation taking away a woman’s right to choose, even in cases of rape and incest. It’s pretty hard to get more far to the right than his Republican colleagues in Congress, but Rand Paul has surprised us time and time again.”
