Las Vegas, NV – The Nevada State Democratic Party released the following statement regarding Nevada Senator Harry Reid’s announcement that he will retire from the United States Senate at the end of his current term:
“Harry Reid has been the most effective fighter the state of Nevada has ever had in the United States Senate. Just as he isn’t done fighting for Nevada’s middle class for these next two years in the United States Senate, Harry Reid isn’t done fighting to elect Democrats across Nevada who will stand up for Nevadans struggling to put food on the table and a roof over their children’s heads. With Senator Reid’s help, we will hold this Senate seat, we will win back seats in our congressional delegation, and we will take back both chambers of the state legislature and end Carson City Republicans’ attacks on the paychecks of middle class families.
“From bringing thousands of good-paying clean energy jobs to Nevada, to passing the historic Lilly Ledbetter Act to help women receive equal pay for equal work, to passing critical health insurance reform that ended the worst abuses of private insurance companies, Harry Reid has woken up every day fighting for middle class families and those struggling to make it. He zeroed out money for Yucca Mountain to prevent Washington bureaucrats from turning Nevada into a nuclear waste dump, secured billions of dollars in infrastructure funding for Nevada that created thousands of jobs and expanded Nevada roads, and has fought tirelessly to protect Nevada’s great outdoors like Lake Tahoe. And while House Republicans have spent the past few years passing bills to deport thousands of Nevada DREAMers and tear families apart, Harry Reid successfully passed a bipartisan immigration reform compromise over two years ago that would secure our borders and bring millions of undocumented immigrants out of the shadows and earn a path to citizenship. Harry Reid never forgot where he came from, and Nevadans will never forget all he has done for our great state.
“In addition to Harry Reid’s countless accomplishments for the state of Nevada as a Senator, he has also spent the last decade building the best state party infrastructure in the country. We will hold onto this Senate seat and look forward to electing a Democratic candidate who will fight for more jobs, better schools, and an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy. In contrast, as we’ve seen from the last few months in Washington DC and Carson City, Republicans are focused on cutting the pay of Nevada families while giving handouts to their wealthy campaign donors, slashing Medicare and Social Security, repealing the minimum wage, and restricting women’s access to preventative healthcare. We will provide the voters a clear choice in 2016 between a Democrat who is focused on ensuring economic opportunity for everyone and growing the middle class with a Republican who sides with big corporations and billionaires like the Koch Brothers at the expense of Nevada families.”
