Las Vegas, NV – Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Roberta Lange released the following statement after Congressman Steven Horsford announced he will not run again for the Fourth Congressional District next year:
“Steven Horsford is an outstanding public servant who overcame a tough childhood and great adversity to rise to become Nevada’s first African American State Senate Majority Leader and first African American member of Congress. As a member of Congress, Steven fought tirelessly for economic fairness and to reform our broken immigration system. While we miss having him represent Nevada’s middle class in Congress, Steven has a bright future in Nevada politics and I look forward to seeing what he does next. Nevada Democrats were proud to have him in Congress fighting for middle class families and those struggling to make it.
“What doesn’t change today is the fact that Congressman Cresent Hardy has the wrong priorities for this district. Just today, instead of joining Senator Reid’s efforts to keep Yucca Mountain dead, Hardy announced he will tour Yucca with proponents of turning our state into a nuclear waste dump. Hardy supports reckless Republican proposals that slash Medicare and Social Security while protecting tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations that ship American jobs overseas. He opposes comprehensive immigration reform and President Obama’s deferred action program. And he agrees with corporate layoff specialist Mitt Romney that 47% of the American people are freeloaders who don’t pay taxes. Nevada Democrats will mount a vigorous campaign to take this seat back so middle class families in this congressional district will, once again, have a voice fighting for them, not the wealthy few.”
