Just a few short months ago, Sharron Angle was the only candidate with the backbone to stand up to John Ensign, to call him out for his sordid affair and subsequent cover up.
Angle took a hard line on Ensign, called him untrustworthy and said she'd “never compromise” on her principles on that.
Said Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John L. Smith at the time:
While other Republicans ducked questions about Ensign, or astonishingly supported him despite his ham-handed payoff and cover-up attempts in a sex scandal, Angle nails the wounded politician between the eyes.
"If your wife can't trust you, how can I trust you?" she asks.
How refreshing -- an office-seeker who actually calls it as she sees it.
Angle is believable when she says, "Never compromise, conciliate, or build consensus on your principles.
What a different a few months makes. Now Ensign is under investigation and staring down an indictment, and Angle’s principles have evaporated.
In June, Angle and Ensign were seen practically arm-in-arm in the Capitol, as Ensign introduced the newly anointed GOP nominee to the Senate Republican Caucus at a luncheon, where he ran interference for her with the DC press corps.
Apparently compromise, conciliation and consensus on those principles she holds so dear are available for the bargain price of a $5,000 PAC contribution.
And now today – the new Sharron Angle, guided by her DC handlers and with no regard for the truth, ducked and dodged questions about Ensign – then flat-out lied that she'd ever judged his behavior in the past. Watch the video here.
Angle appeared on Sam Shad’s Nevada Newsmakers to say that anyone who’s “80 percent with me, we’re friends. We agree. And I take the support of everyone.”
Of course, if you can’t trust the words of Primary Candidate Sharron Angle ("If your wife can't trust you, how can I trust you?”), how can we trust GOP Nominee Sharron Angle?
Full transcript:
Sam Shad: After your remarks about your behavior I was surprised to see you welcome his support.
Sharron Angle: He was very open and generous to me. Again, if you’re 80 percent with me, we’re friends. We agree. And I take the support of everyone.
Shad: And potentially he could be under indictment. Would you still welcome his support?
Angle: Sen. Ensign is going to have to deal with his situation and that’s not for me to judge.
Shad: You did judge at the time, though.
Angle: I was asked, I was asked about the situation and I said at the time how I felt about that. That was not a judgment. Judgment I believe in our country carries consequence. I’m not there to tell what the consequence of his action should be. I just said how I felt about his actions and when we start to talk about this, again, it is, people are coming from all quarters to support Sharron Angle. I welcome their support. It doesn’t necessarily mean I agree with everything they say.
