Sue Lowden to 40 million Nevada tourists: take the bus

January 18, 2010: Las Vegas, NV. – Despite airport security being tighter than it’s ever been before, U.S. Senate candidate Sue Lowden – who wants to represent a state that relies on air travel and tourism as its main industrial engine – says she’s afraid to fly the friendly skies.

Lowden told the Las Vegas Review-Journal editorial board last week that “it’s frightening now to be on a plane…  We need to do whatever it takes to make it safe.”

News flash, Sue Lowden: Sen. Harry Reid and Democrats are doing everything it takes to make it safe.

Just last week Sen. Reid toured Terminal 3 at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, where the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act he passed with Democrats is funding 2,000 construction jobs and easing overcrowding at an airport that processes more than 1,000 flights every day and tens of millions of tourists every year. That terminal will also include state-of-the-art safety systems, including two security check points and 16 explosive detectors to screen bags, which will keep travelers safe when they fly through Las Vegas.

So, while Sue Lowden frets over the safety of our skies and as much as tells the 40 million travelers from around the world who visit Las Vegas each year that they should stay home, Democrats led by Sen. Reid are actually doing something to ensure their safety.

“Once again we’re seeing how unprepared Sue Lowden really is to take on the monumental task of serving Nevada in the U.S. Senate,” said Phoebe Sweet, communications director for the Nevada State Democratic Party. “You also have to wonder whether Sue Lowden got the memo that being a senator means flying to Washington. Because if she’s terrified to even fly there, how does she plan to deliver for Nevadans the way Sen. Reid does?”

Or, as Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John L. Smith put it, “If she wants to land in the U.S. Senate, Sue Lowden will have to conquer her irrational fear of flying.”
