Chants “Drill baby, drill” and promotesderegulation in midst of nation’s worst ever oil spill
Meet Sharron Angle, the self-proclaimed “wacky” GOP senate candidate whosepositions are so far right they’re just plain wrong – and dangerous for Nevada. Hear Sharron's "wacky" views from her own mouth in this new video by the Nevada Democratic Party.
In her eightyears as a state legislator and during months of campaigning for Senate, Anglehas made it clear that she’s out of touch with all but the most conservativeNevadan. Angle said she’s tired of even Republicans “calling (her) wacky.”
On oil:
· Sen. Reid is determined to prevent a disastrous spill like the onein the Gulf from ever happening again.
· Angle sayswe need to "deregulate" Big Oil. Accordingto the Washington Post, Angle said in a recent interview that theGulf spill was an "accident" and opined that we need to further"deregulate" the oil industry in the wake of the disaster. Here's theexchange, from a Nevada Newsmakers interview on May 26th, more than a month into the spillcrisis:
QUESTION: You have been in support of onshore drilling in theUnited States as well as offshore drilling, are you rethinking that policy withwhat is going on in Louisiana?
ANGLE: No. I think that what happened in Louisiana was anaccident. They're cleaning it up. We need to go forward and talk aboutprevention and not about whether we keep it out all together. ... How do wederegulate enough to invite our industries to come back into the United Statesand quit outsourcing their business?
On Yucca:
· Sen. Reid killed the Yucca MountainProject, a plan to store dangerous nuclearwaste 90 miles from Las Vegas opposedby the vast majority of Nevadans.
· “We shouldn't think of ourselves as anuclear wasteland, we should think of ourselves as a recycleland,” Angle said in 2002. [Reno Gazette-Journal, 10/2/2002] And she’s stuck bythat. “We should be looking at the technologies to recycle, to reprocess, reuse… put them into a power plant right here in the state of Nevada. [SharronAngle Campaign Event, 9/1/2009]
Delivering for Nevada:
· Sen. Reid has the clout to deliver for Nevada – from bringingjob-creating investments in renewable energy to the state to a $600 millionveteran’s hospital in Las Vegas to preserving Lake Tahoe.
· Sharron Angle was voted worst member of the Nevada Assembly notonce but twice in Review-Journal polls, including once during her very firstterm in office. [Review-Journal, 5/30/1999, 6/21/2005]
On government:
· Sen. Reid has ensured Nevadans’ safetyfrom Yucca Mountain, their jobs with renewable energy and transmission projectsand their futures with stimulus funding for education.
· Angle wants to eliminate theDepartments of Education and Energy – part of her plan to “take back our government.”[Nevada News and Views, 3/22/2010]
On Wall Streetreform:
· Sen. Reid championed legislation thatwill hold the big banks that caused this financial crisis accountable so thattaxpayers will never be on the hook for big bailouts ever again.
· Angle opposed any efforts to reformWall Street or regulate big banks. It was too much regulation – not too little– that caused the financial meltdown. [Las Vegas Sun, 4/28/2010, 4/18/2010]
On families:
· Sen. Reid supported the LillyLedbetter Fair Pay Act – which ensured equal pay for equal work.

On SocialSecurity and Medicare:
· Sen. Reid strengthened Medicare withby eliminating waste and fraud as part of health insurance reform, and byclosing the doughnut hole, making preventive care and yearly checkups free forseniors. And he has fought to strengthen Social Security and protect it fromRepublican efforts to privatize the crucial program.
· “We need to phase Medicare and SocialSecurity out in favor of something privatized,” Angle said. [Face to FaceDebate, 5/19/10]
On unemployment:
· Sen. Reid has fought to extendunemployment and COBRA benefits for out-of-work Nevadans.
· During the worst financial downturn indecades, Angle called Nevadans relying on unemployment assistance during hardtimes, “spoiled.” [KRNV, 5/25/2010] A week later she called unemploymentinsurance a “terrible thing” and said that people who needed a hand up during arecession aren’t taking the “good jobs that are out there” because “they wantto be dependent on the government.” [Heidi Harris in the Morning, 6/2/2010]
“While Sen. Reidhas a record of delivering for Nevada when it matters most – by creating jobs, fighting for our men and women in arms and killing a nuclear waste dump plannedfor Yucca Mountain – Sharron Angle is not only wacky, but downright scary, too,” said Phoebe Sweet, communications director for the Nevada StateDemocratic Party. “Because, while her ideas may seem merely ‘wacky’ or out oftouch now, just imagine the damage she could do with a vote in the U.S. Senate.
“Nevadans have achoice between a senator who stands up for them or a right-wing ideologue whosedangerous ideas include wiping out Social Security and unregulated drillingthat could mean a disaster beyond even the tragedy we’re seeing in the Gulf. And the choice is clear. Nevada needs Harry Reid.”
