Sharron Angle: No Woman’s Right to Choose, Even in Cases of Rape or Incest

Would Deny Individual Choice Because God "Can Intercede"

Yesterday the Las Vegas Review-Journal said Sharron Angle must appeal to women if she wants to become Nevada’s first female senator.

Angle’s idea of appealing to women:

·         Tell them they’re wrong to be in the work force if their husbands are, too.
·         Make it harder for women to access their OB-GYN.
·         Perpetuate the lie that abortion leads to breast cancer.
·         Oppose insurance companies covering mammograms.

But while those stances are shockingly anti-woman, Angle’s hard line on abortion in cases of rape and incest is even more terrifying. When asked by conservative radio talk host Bill Manders whether she would support banning abortion even in cases of rape or incest Angle said there was no acceptable reason for an abortion because "God has a plan."

Manders: Is there any reason at all for an abortion?

Angle: Not in my book.

Manders: So, in other words, rape and incest would not be something?

Angle: You know, I’m a Christian and I believe that God has a plan and a purpose for each one of our lives and that he can intercede in all kinds of situations and we need to have a little faith in many things.

Coming from someone who says she believes in legislating morality as seen through the eyes from a woman completely outside the mainstream, this view is even more terrifying.

Sharron Angle’s position on abortion – that even a woman whose pregnancy is the result of rape or incest should not have the right to terminate the pregnancy – is not only disturbing but also miles outside the mainstream even for conservative Republicans.

“It’s no wonder 89-year-old Republican Barbara Vucanovich, the first woman from Nevada to hold federal office, said she doesn’t know whether she’ll vote for angle. If she can’t win over Vucanovich, how does she expect to win over voting women with such an abysmal record on women’s issues?” said Phoebe Sweet, communications director for the Nevada State Democratic Party. “If Sharron Angle were Nevada’s first female senator, it would be a massive step back for Nevada women and women across this country. Coupled with a record on women’s issues that is frankly atrocious, this information on Angle’s dangerous views on abortion is nothing short of alarming.”
