Republicans side with special interests over voters

January 21, 2010: Las Vegas, NV. - Republicans today sided against the people who elected them, instead praising a Supreme Court decision giving more power to big banks, insurance companies and Wall Street.

The decision was a blow to the rights of ordinary people to compete on a level playing field with special interests and big business, who will seek to sway elections and votes in Congress with their billions. Under the decision of the Bush/Roberts court, corporations now have the same rights as the people of United States, whom the elected government is supposed to serve.
"This is just another example of Republicans putting their big business cronies ahead of the people they were elected to serve - working families who can't compete with special interest dollars," said Sam Lieberman, chairman of the Nevada State Democratic Party. "While each man and woman in America gets only one vote, the decision radically changes to whom our government should be responsible. Voters have already soundly rejected this culture of special interests and corruption Republicans have spoken up in favor of.

"Today's ruling will have immediate political consequences, and Nevadans should be wary of a Republican Party that sides with the corporations who would seek to influence the outcome of our elections in such a way."
