Nevada State Democratic Party Statement on Heller/TEA Party Shutdown Attempt

Las Vegas, NV – In response to the increasing likelihood of a shutdown of the federal government led by Rep. Dean Heller and the extreme TEA Party wing in the House of Representatives, Nevada State Democratic Party Communications Director Zach Hudson issued the following statement:
“Dean Heller and his TEA Party allies in Congress are irresponsibly using the federal budget process to promote their extremist agenda. President Obama and Congressional Democrats have met Republican calls for spending cuts every step of the way. The only issue holding back a compromise is the Heller/TEA Party effort to eliminate funding for women’s health centers.
“These centers provide essential services such as cancer screenings for women and it is irresponsible for Heller to tie his extreme agenda to negotiations over the federal budget. Make no mistake about it, a federal shutdown will be felt by all Americans and may delay paychecks being delivered to our men and women serving our country overseas.
“If the federal government does indeed shut down, it is because of Heller and the TEA Party’s efforts to defund women’s health centers, not their artificial concern over the federal deficit. It is time for Dean Heller to abandon his anti-women, anti-jobs extremist agenda and start representing all Nevadans, not just his far right-wing base.”
