Ensign Delays Help for Out of Work Nevadans One More Day

Ensign and Angle Would Have Left “Spoiled” Unemployed Out in Cold

Despite weeks of Republican obstructionism, the Senate has passed an all-important procedural vote to move forward on extending unemployment benefits for out-of-work people affected by the tough economy.

But although Republicans like Sen. John Ensign know that the bill has the votes to pass thanks to Sen. Reid’s leadership, they are heartlessly making the 30,000 Nevadans who have lost their benefits in recent weeks wait one more day for a final vote.

While many who are struggling to find work are worrying about how to put food on the table or keep a roof over their children’s heads, John Ensign is worrying about playing partisan political games.

But that’s no surprise coming from Nevada Republicans. After all, we’ve known where John Ensign and Sharron Angle stand on lending Nevadans a helping hand during tough times.

Like Ensign, Angle has long believed that extending unemployment benefits would be “a terrible thing.”

She thinks workers are “spoiled” because they’re “making more on unemployment,” and don’t want to get “one of those… honest jobs.”

While Republicans like John Ensign – with support from Sharron Angle – have been using obstructionist tactics to hold help for out-of-work people hostage, more than 30,000 Nevadans have lost their unemployment benefits.

“That John Ensign is willing to stand between struggling families and a means to make ends meet during tough times is certainly cruel and heartless – but it’s no surprise,” said Phoebe Sweet, communications director for the Nevada State Democratic Party. “But despite the efforts of Team Ensign/Angle to leave those hardest hit by this recession out in the cold, thanks to Sen. Reid’s leadership, help is on the way for struggling Nevadans.”
