Have Sue Lowden’s Senate hopes flown the coop?

By Greg Sargent

Chickens-for-checkups may have provided us with weeks of entertainment, but the story has a serious side: Weeks after this tale first waddled its way into the national consciousness, it may have ended  Sue Lowden's  Senate hopes.

Two new polls out this morning show that Lowden has fallen well behind hard-right Tea Party candidate Sharron Angle.

First, a Suffolk University poll, which just landed in the old inbox, finds that Angle has taken an eight point lead over Lowden among Nevada GOP primary voters, 32-24.

And second, DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas Tweets that the forthcoming Research 2000 poll he sponsored will show that Angle has taken a "significant lead."

Given Angle's hard right positions, this is obviously good news for Harry Reid, and signals a changed dynamic from only weeks ago, when it looked as if Reid was going to have serious trouble hanging onto his seat. But for now, the story worth contemplating is Lowden's epic collapse -- all because of one unfortunate line about chickens. It's one for the ages.

Indeed, it's clear that Lowden is angry about the way chickens-for-checkups has steadily pecked away at her hopes. She's got a post up on her blog that attempts to turn bartergate back on Reid, by pointing to a story about a land deal involving Reid and alleging that he's a "first class barterer." Lowden concludes with this bitter swipe:

At least in the "olden days," trading a chicken for a checkup was an honest exchange.

Unrepentant about chickens-for-checkups until the bitter end.
