youngdemsicon.jpgYoung Dems cheer College Cost Reduction Act

youngdems.jpgSept. 20th - Yesterday, at both UNLV and UNR campuses, Young Democrats of America helped create postcards thanking Congress for passing the College Cost Reduction Act.

This act, which is considered the most significant piece of legislation to help students since the GI Bill, passed Congress last Friday.

The bill will do, among other things, the following:

- Cut the interest rate on federally backed student loans by 50%, dow to 3.4% from 6.8%

- Increase the amount of money included in the Pell Grant to $4,800 a year next year, then up to $5,400 dollars a year by 2012.

- Cap student loan payments at 15% of monthly discretionary income.

- Loan forgiveness for those individuals that engage in public service or join the military.

Both campus organizations were able to obtain hundreds of signatures from students happy to see their Government helping relieve some of their mounting financial burden associated with higher education.

Bush's disapproval rating worst of any president in 70 years

An article in the USA Today highlighted a recent USA Today/Gallup Poll that shows only 28% of Americans approving of the job George W. Bush is doing; 69% disapprove.

The author, Susan Page, also indicated that the disapproval rating is "the highest disapproval rating of any president in the 70-year history of the Gallup Poll."
