Seventy percent of Spanish voter registration forms in 2007 went Democratic
Seventy percent of Clark County residents who completed Spanish
language voter registration forms in 2007 registered as Democrats, a
potential indication of how Nevada Hispanics will trend on an important
presidential election year.
According to the Clark County Elections Department, of the voters who
completed Spanish language registration forms in 2007, 70 percent
registered as Democrats, compared to 17.4 percent who registered as
Republicans (1,189 registered as Democrats, 298 registered as
Republicans and 223 registered as nonpartisans or with other parties).
Compare that to the trend between 2000 and 2006, when, on average, 50
percent of people who filled out Spanish language registration forms in
Clark County registered as Democrats, and 34 percent registered as
Republicans. The remaining number registered as nonpartisans or with
other parties.
Hispanics make up 24 percent of Nevada’s population and, according to
one exit poll, comprised 15 percent of the turnout to Nevada’s January
19th Democratic presidential caucus.
“Hispanics turned out in higher numbers in the 2006 election and at the
January 19th caucuses — proving that Hispanics truly could make the
difference to help win Nevada for a Democrat in 2008,” said Andres
Ramirez, outreach director for the Nevada Democratic Party.
“Democrats are talking about the issues that are important to all
families, including Hispanics, from expanding health care and improving
education to helping families struggling with the housing foreclosure
crisis.”
Nevada Democrats have reversed voter registration trends statewide.
Democrats trailed Republicans in the number of active registered voters
in November, 2006, by more than 5,000 voters. Democrats now lead
Republicans by 5,000 active registered voters statewide, and are
expected to receive a larger boost once voter registration forms from
the January 19th caucus are processed.
