Once again, Porter isn’t really there for kids when they need him
When push comes to shove, Congressman Jon Porter doesn’t really support
health care for uninsured kids. Porter voted yesterday for President
Bush’s fiscally irresponsible budget, which does nothing to help the
estimated 113,000 Nevada kids who go without health care.
Last year, Porter repeatedly touted his vote to renew funds for the
Children's Health Insurance Program — which President Bush opposed — as
a measure of his independence from the politically unpopular
President. Porter didn’t mention that he voted EIGHT times to stop the
bill from coming to the House floor for a vote before he supported the
measure.
Porter is facing a tough reelection in an increasingly Democratic
district and a record of being President Bush’s puppet, said Kirsten
Searer, deputy executive director of the Nevada Democratic Party.
“Jon Porter needs to be straight once and for all with his constituents
— does he support providing health care to Nevada’s 113,000 uninsured
kids or not?” Searer said. “Now is not the time to flip-flop or play
political games on this issue. Nevadans deserve a representative who
has the courage to stand up for kids every time.”
