Last summer, the Nevada Democratic Party set a goal of sending a diverse group of delegates to represent Nevada at the Democratic National Convention.  Nevada was awarded an early presidential caucus position due in part to our state’s great diversity. We’re proud to say that last weekend, at our state convention, Democrats exceeded those goals:

Goal: Two African American delegates
Number of African American delegates going to Denver: Eight

Gibran Baydoun, Congressional District 3 Obama delegate
Kelvin Atkinson, Party Leader and Elected Official delegate for Obama
Vertis Manuel, At-Large delegate for Obama

Goal: Four Hispanic delegates
Number of Hispanic delegates going to Denver: Ten

Also, two of the Alternate delegates for Obama, JoEtta Brown and Tracey Harriford, are African American. Clinton alternate Derek Washington is African American.

“Nevada is a true test of the West and all of the diversity it encompasses,” said Sam Lieberman, chair of the Nevada Democratic Party, who is also a superdelegate with a disability. “We’re proud the delegation we will send to Denver represents our population.”
