Today marks the fifth anniversary of the start of the Iraq war.  Poll after poll shows that Nevadans do not want to be mired in an endless civil war, yet John McCain — supported by Congressmen Jon Porter and Dean Heller — argues that American troops could be in Iraq for 100 years.

As the economy continues to slide into what Alan Greenspan said could be the worst slow-down since World War II, John McCain's endless war in Iraq is draining economic resources that would help Nevada’s working families.   A sample of the cost of the Iraq war to Nevada’s families:

- Nevada taxpayers have paid $4.7 billion for the Iraq War — or $4,100 for each Nevada household — which could have provided 1,072,866 people with health care [National Priorities Project, nationalpriorities.org]

- Almost 4,000 brave men and women in uniform have lost their lives since the beginning of the war, including 34 from Nevada. [icasualties.org]

- An estimated 28,838 people in the military have been wounded in Iraq, including 176 from Nevada. [icasualties.org]

- About 2,591 of Nevada’s National Guard and Reserve Troops have been deployed since September, 2001, taxing our state’s ability to respond to disasters and crises.

- A recent study shows the Iraq war is now costing U.S. taxpayers $12 billion dollars a month. That means that for the cost of less than a week in Iraq, we could hire 51,000 police officers to make America safer. [AP, 3/10/08; Speaker Pelosi Fact Sheet, 8/29/07]
- For four months in Iraq, we could get low-income kids health care for five years. [AP, 3/10/08; Speaker Pelosi Fact Sheet, 8/29/07]

- And for just three weeks in Iraq, we could enroll 1.4 million kids in Head Start and get them the education they need. [AP, 3/10/08; Speaker Pelosi Fact Sheet, 8/29/07]

“Despite his double talk on the campaign trail, John McCain supports President Bush’s endless civil war, and now argues we could be in Iraq for 100 years or more,” said Kirsten Searer, deputy executive director of the Nevada Democratic Party. “Nevadans are feeling the cost of the war here at home.  McCain, Porter and Heller — that’s a recipe for another four years of occupying Iraq while diverting critical resources from the war on terrorism and Nevada’s priorities here at home.”

Bush's disapproval rating worst of any president in 70 years

An article in the USA Today highlighted a recent USA Today/Gallup Poll that shows only 28% of Americans approving of the job George W. Bush is doing; 69% disapprove.

The author, Susan Page, also indicated that the disapproval rating is "the highest disapproval rating of any president in the 70-year history of the Gallup Poll."
