While the presidential and congressional candidates usually get the most headlines, legislative races are equally important to the future of our state. The Nevada Legislature passes laws on school funding, health care, public safety, senior services, development of renewable energy, ethics, water, transportation issues----and more.

Currently, there are 10 Democrats and 11 Republicans in the State Senate. If we can pick up just one seat in the 2008 elections, Democrats will control the Senate.

We now have 27 Democrats and 15 Republicans in the State Assembly. We know the Republicans will be mounting an aggressive effort to win some of the seats Democrats now hold. Not only do we need to make sure we re-elect all of our Democratic incumbents, we need to pick up seats as well.

Here is how you can help--

1.    Help with Voter Registration—Over the past year, Nevada—and most of our legislative districts--have become more Democratic. We need to keep that trend going! We need to get Democrats new to the state registered and help those who have moved get their information updated.  While many campaign activities will not get started until late spring, this is something you can do to help NOW.

2.    Help walk a precinct---Success in State Assembly and State Senate races depends on one-on-one contact with voters. One of the most effective ways to do this is at the door—talking to voters in their own homes. Successful legislative candidates spend hours and hours walking door-to-door in their districts, introducing themselves to voters and finding out which issues most concern the people they represent or seek to represent. Legislative candidates need your help with this door-to-door effort.

3.    Don’t want to walk door-to-door? You can help by making phone calls. With Nevada’s culture of people working so many different shifts and with people in general being so busy these days, we can’t reach everyone in their homes. That’s where the telephone comes in. You can help make phone calls on behalf of a legislative candidate—inviting voters to candidate events, telling voters about the candidate or even conducting a simple survey on behalf of the candidate.

4.    Put up a yardsign on your lawn or in a window. Almost all legislative candidates have yardsigns to be placed in voters’ yards, or in some cases, in windows. This is a great way of telling voters the candidate has support from their neighbors and friends.

5.    Talk to your friends and neighbors about the Assembly candidate and Senate candidate running in your precinct. You can walk door-to-door in your precinct, make phone calls, host a small party so neighbors can come meet the candidate, or send postcards or deliver a personal note from you on the candidate’s behalf.

6.    Help with GOTV—get out the vote.  Urge everyone you know to vote—either by mail, during Early Voting, or on Election Day. Help provide rides to the polls.

So, how can you get started? Call your legislator and offer your services or call the Democratic Legislative Caucus at 702-255-4842.

Bush's disapproval rating worst of any president in 70 years

An article in the USA Today highlighted a recent USA Today/Gallup Poll that shows only 28% of Americans approving of the job George W. Bush is doing; 69% disapprove.

The author, Susan Page, also indicated that the disapproval rating is "the highest disapproval rating of any president in the 70-year history of the Gallup Poll."
