Targeted legislative districts see dramatic gains in Democratic registration
Democrats recently picked up ground or surpassed Republicans in every
Clark County State Senate and State Assembly district, new voter
registration numbers indicate. New registration numbers for the rest of
the state should be available within the next week.
Two targeted State Senate districts now have Democratic registration
advantages. State Senate District 6, currently held by Bob Beers (R-Las
Vegas), has a slight Democratic advantage for the first time. Another
targeted Senate district, Senate District 5, has a 1,644-voter
Democratic lead.
Democrats are aiming to pick up at least one seat in the State Senate
to gain a majority and to improve their numbers in the State Assembly.
Democrats have made progress in suburban districts that have been seen
as Republican strongholds, such as Assembly District 13, now
represented by Chad Christensen, R-Las Vegas. AD 13 went from having
4,185 more Republicans in 2006 to having 457 more Democrats as of
February 20.
“These trends are consistent throughout Clark County, but especially in
suburban areas that have trended Republican in the past,” said Lindsey
Jydstrup, executive director of the Democratic Legislative Caucus.
“Suburban swing voters are ready for change.”
Jydstrup said Democrats would be working hard throughout the spring to increase Democratic registration.
Senate District 9, now held by Dennis Nolan, R-Las Vegas, went from a
5,232 Republican advantage in 2006 to a Democratic advantage of 1,150.
Nolan will be up for re-election in 2010.
