Nevada’s Democrats Pioneer GI Bill expansion |

Nevada’s Democrats in Washington -- Rep. Shelley Berkley and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — have spent months fighting Republicans to expand the GI Bill to ensure that our troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have the opportunity to complete their education.
The new GI Bill, signed into law on June 30, restores full, four-year college scholarships to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to help make them part of an economic recovery — similar to the opportunity given to returning veterans of World War II.

BERKLEY AGAIN VOTES TO EXTEND UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS |
For the second time in as many days, Congresswoman Shelley Berkley voted to extend unemployment benefits an additional 13 weeks for qualified Nevadans who are out of work. The bill, which was narrowly defeated yesterday, passed the House this afternoon on a vote of 274-137.
“While it may have taken two tries, we passed this 13 week unemployment extension package. I urge President Bush and Senate Republicans not to block this vital assistance for Americans who are out of work and in search of jobs,” said Berkley.

b) Banning all gifts from lobbyists to lawmaker and their staff.
c) Tightening provisions regarding congressional travel junkets paid for by lobbyists

Our Democratic Congressional delegation recently helped pass the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Administration Appropriations Act , which will funnel $341 million to Nevada in order to facilitate the construction of a veterans’ hospital in Las Vegas.

|
The College Cost Reduction and Access Act passed with the strong support of Nevada Congresswoman Shelley Berkley.
“This is the single biggest investment in college aid since the passage of the GI bill and I am proud we have delivered on our pledge to lower the cost of higher education for more American families. As a former Nevada University Regent, and a proud UNLV graduate, I have seen first hand the doors a higher education opens for men and women of all ages, and this important legislation will help more Americans earn their college diplomas,” said Berkley.
