Nevada’s Democrats Pioneer GI Bill expansion |

Nevada’s Democrats in Washington -- Rep. Shelley Berkley and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — have spent months fighting Republicans to expand the GI Bill to ensure that our troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have the opportunity to complete their education.
The new GI Bill, signed into law on June 30, restores full, four-year college scholarships to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to help make them part of an economic recovery — similar to the opportunity given to returning veterans of World War II.
Under the bill, service members returning from Iraq or Afghanistan, who
have served three years on active duty, would receive benefits to cover
the costs of a four-year education up to the level of the most
expensive in-state public school. Education benefits would be available
to troops who have served at least 3 months of active duty since
September 11, 2001, including members of the National Guard and Reserve.
Republicans such as John McCain fought this bill, offering up lesser
versions. They even argued that providing a quality education for our
troops would motivate them to leave service early! Democrats believe
we must honor the sacrifices that our service members make.
